A short film has been released documenting the hardship and brutality of life in Scotland’s notorious Dungavel detention centre

OFTEN billed as ‘Scotland’s Shame’, the existence of Dungavel detention centre has been a source of controversy for years due to the conditions inside and the very nature of immigration detention itself.

The Home Office recently announced its intention to close the centre down, and Renfrewshire Council rejected plans in November to open a replacement facility.

‘Behind the Wire’ is a photographic film which captures the testimonies of those held behind the fences of the historic Dungavel Castle, seeking to give voice to those rendered unwanted by the British state. Directed by Liam O’Hare, it offers a glimpse into the injustice faced by those locked up after trying to escape violence and hardship.
