Real Media tour comes to Glasgow for two days of discussions and workshops on how to challenge corporate media
JOURNALISTS from across Scotland and the UK’s new media will come together for two days in Glasgow this week (Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 October) to debate and organise new strategies for undermining the hegemony of the corporate media.
The Real Media network, in collaboration with new media figures from across several platforms including CommonSpace, Open Democracy and the New Internationalist will meet in the Scottish Trade Union Congress headquarters for discussions on the current state of the media and practical ways its political influence can be countered.
Speaking to CommonSpace ahead of the events Tom Barlow, senior editor for Real Media said: “I don't think there has been a more important time to discuss and change the media in the UK. Recent events such as Indyref, the 2015 General Election and Brexit has shown the media to be highly partisan, flying in the face of public interest and unfit for purpose.”
The event on Wednesday will host talks from CommonSpace editor Angela Haggerty, co-editor of Open Democracy Adam Ramsay and Greg Philo of the Glasgow University media group.
The open meeting will discuss the media’s capacity to intervene decisively in major political events in the contemporary UK, which have been so on display during national debates such as the Scottish Independence referendum of 2014 and the referendum which resulted in a shock vote for Brexit in June.
Thursday’s event will feature practical sessions on how to influence the media from the grassroots up as well as how to broadcast media across various platforms, from video to radio to social media. The workshop session will be lead by Jamie Kelsey-Fry, contributing editor to the magazine the New Internationalist.
Both events will run from 7:30pm to 9pm.
The events form part of a UK wide tour by Real Media, which has seen packed out events in Manchester and Bristol, and will also take in Brighton, Leeds, Newcastle, Oxford, Leicester, Birmingham, London.
