Former Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres has died at the age of 93. The politician six decades has been praised for softening his pro-war stance as his career progressed, but was involved in the Haganah, a militia that committed acts of genocide against Palestinians, in his youth. He also helped to arm the young colonial state with advanced weapons.

Scottish Labour leader Kezia Dugdale has appointed herself Scotland’s representative on the Labour party’s national executive committee (NEC). The move is part of moves towards greater autonomy for the Scottish party and also tilts the balance on the powerful body away from leftist leader Jeremy Corbyn towards dissidents.

US tennis star Serena Williams has spoken out against police violence towards black people in the US. In a facebook message she recounted here fears about driving a car as a black woman when she saw a police officer. Quoting civil rights leader Martin Luther King she wrote: “There comes a time when silence is betrayal.”
