Shelter Scotland has said that private tenants need more financial support to avoid debt and homelessness, arguing that the housing element of Universal Credit is too low to support many who are applying for it for the first time. The housing element of UC covers the lowest third of market rents, but for many – especially in Lothians and Glasgow – their rent costs will be significantly in excess of this. (STV)
