Disability rights activists concerned over extension of DOO trains
DISABLE PEOPLE AGAINST CUTS (DPAC) Glasgow and the RMT Union held a rally today (8 May) for safe and accessible Scottish trains at Glasgow’s central station.
Central Station, Glasgow from 12 to 2pm and Queen Street, Station, Glasgow from 4pm to 6pm.
The demonstration was organised jointly by the disability rights activists and trade unionists against any increase in the number of Driver Only Operated (DOO) trains and unstaffed stations preventing disabled people from being able to travel on Scottish trains with the same freedom, choice and dignity as other citizens.
The protest comes after months of industrial action by the RMT in 2016 against the extension of DOO trains on Scotrail services, which are controlled by the Abellio corporation. Strikes have taken place against the extension of DOO across the UK, which operate without guards to operate the doors and which unions claim are unsafe and restrcts access to disabled passengers.

Abellio has repeatedly insisted that DOO trains can run without threatening safety, and that large numbers of Scottish trains are already operated in this way.
