COMMONSPACE is hiring two members of staff to our team in Glasgow.

Position 1: Production & Communications assistant

CommonSpace is looking for a skilled and creative production & communications assistant to make our output more accessible and engaging to a wider audience, especially by utilising audiovisual methods.

Details of the role:

£8.75 an hour

25 hours per week. Six month fixed-term contract.

Closing date for application: Wednesday 8 August, 10pm.

Start Date: Late August-Early September (specific date flexible)

Key skill requirements:

  • Capable in production and editing of video and audio to a high standard and in a timely fashion.
  • Can devise creative and engaging ways to enhance editorial output by expanding audio visual content, from specific format programming to production of news clips.
  • Is proficient in graphic design and motion graphics.
  • Has an eye for visual communication that attracts readers/viewers.
  • Can work flexibly as required, adapting themselves to the needs of the news team.
  • Has a commitment to the editorial values and ethos of CommonSpace

Desirable but not essential attributes:

  • Has an understanding of political journalism and Scottish politics.
  • Is a capable writer.
  • Has an understanding of how to use social media platforms effectively as a communication tool, especially through news-based audio-visual communication.

Further information:

  • The successful applicant would be working under the editorial direction of the CommonSpace editor.
  • He or she will primarily be working on how to communicate the journalistic work of the present team, but with flexibility to work on their own original journalistic content, and on news writing if required.
  • There will be substantial room to offer new ideas about CommonSpace’s approach to video, audio and visual communication.
  • This is a six month fixed-term contract but we hope after reviewing this role there may be potential to create a permanent position.
  • CommonSpace (commonspace.scot) is an online news and analysis Scottish politics website based on the ethos and values of the Common Weal think-tank and campaign group. It currently has a staff team of an editor and three journalists. It is editorially independent from Common Weal.
  • Common Weal (allofusfirst.org) is a grassroots funded think-and-do tank campaigning for social and economic equality in Scotland.

Position 2: Reporter

CommonSpace is looking for a reporter who understands Scottish politics, is an engaging writer, has a nose for stories and has a commitment to the values and ethos of our funder, Common Weal.

Details of the role:

£8.75 an hour

25 hours per week. Permanent contract.

Closing date for application: Wednesday 25th July, 10am

Start Date: Immediate start (with some flexibility for circumstances)

Key requirements:

  • Is a proficient writer
  • Is engaged and interested in the Scottish political scene
  • Has an understanding of journalism (though we do not require any minimum academic qualifications)
  • Has a passion for social justice and believes in the news values of CommonSpace
  • Can communicate complex ideas and issues in an accessible and creative way
  • Can bring fresh ideas and angles to the news focus of the team
  • Can develop strong contacts
  • Can take notes and type efficiently

Desirable but not essential attributes:

  • Is connected into the Scottish political community
  • Can use audiovisual journalistic techniques
  • Has journalistic experience/qualifications
