European group organise discussion at Strathclyde university featuring Scottish advocates of EU membership

THE YOUNG EUROPEAN MOVEMENT (YEM) in Glasgow will hold a question and answer session with representatives of Scotland's political parties focusing on the future of the UK’s relationship with the EU.

The event taking place tomorrow (Saturday 10 September) will be jointly hosted by NewEuropeans.net at Strathclyde University and will discuss future possibilities and challenges regarding Scotland's place in the EU, the rights of EU citizens in Scotland post Brexit and the rights of UK citizens in Scotland.

It will take place between 3 and 5pm the Strathclyde University Students’ Association in Glasgow.

"We are pleased that Guy Verhofstadt has welcomed the Scottish First Minister's involvement in the negotiations and has supported the will to maintain Scotland's presence in the European Union." Gary Paterson

Gary Paterson, YEM Glasgow president, said: "Whilst we are still saddened by the prospect of the UK leaving the EU, and indeed Scotland being dragged out against its will, we welcome the appointment of Guy Verhofstadt MEP to lead the EU Parliament's negotiations for Brexit.

"We have been dismayed by the UK PM's comments about controls on EU citizens coming to the UK and the apparent exit of the single market; inclusive and open-minded discussions must now follow, with the British Government including the nations of the UK in these discussions, and the UK Government setting out its terms as soon as possible.

"It is clear that there are no options off the table, and we are also pleased that Guy Verhofstadt has welcomed the Scottish First Minister's involvement in the negotiations and has supported the will to maintain Scotland's presence in the European Union."

Speakers for the event will include Ross Greer MSP and Europe Spokesperson for the Scottish Greens, Colin Fox, Co-Convener of the Scottish Socialist Party and former MSP, Zara Kitson, Scottish Green and co-author of 'Who If Not Us', Nathan Wilson of the Scottish Conservatives, Billy MacAulay, Scottish Labour and Sandra White MSP, SNP.

Roger Casale, former Labour MP for Wimbeldon and chief executive officer and founder of NewEuropeans who will chair the discussion.

The event comes after news that former Belgian leader Guy Verhofstadt will lead the EU’s Brexit negotiations team. Verhofstadt has been vocal in his support for Scotland’s continued membership of the EU.
